This trains you, moment by moment, to be more aware of the desires that you have been launching since the beginning of the beginning. Even if you think you do not know the answer, ask and listen for what rises up naturally.

OK — you may be like me — carrying a lot more pounds (or kilos or stone) than you really want to.

Or you may be carrying just a few more than you want but feel out of balance with the natural weight of your body.

I learned a long time ago that it's not what I'm eating, it's what's eating me.

How do I know?

Three stories about me and my weight... First:

It started with a bad break-up.

At the beginning of 1997, after the end of a painful relationship, I decided I'd had enough with dieting or worrying about my weight.

I'd come across the radical idea that I could eat anything I wanted.

Plus, I'd figured out that my weight was no one else's business but my own. So, I threw down the towel (figuratively).

I promised myself to never again weigh food, count calories, or worry about fat.

I also promised to never again have a conversation with anyone, at any time, about food or weight or exercise, unless I wanted to. Period.

Pretty powerful stuff!

You know what happened? I gained about 30 pounds and then stopped.

And I've been the same weight ever since (plus or minus a few pounds, but I'll get to that).

That's right.

In the last 14 years I've always eaten as much or as little as I've wanted.

I've eaten a lot of things that I was always told not to eat.

I have tried different diet approaches off and on during that time, but nothing ever really seemed to work for me.

I stopped worrying about food so I stopped gaining weight.

Now, why is that?

And consider this...

I haven't lost weight either.

Oh, I have here and there, from time to time.

But I always end up right back at about the same place.

There is one big exception, however. And it's kind of interesting.

In 2003, I spent a lot of time going back and forth to Italy for work.

And every time I was in Italy for longer than a week or so, I would notice that I was losing weight! Woo hoo! Right?

This happened more than once, so that's when I began to pay attention.

Now, there's more to this story and it has nothing to do with Mediterranean diet (I detest fish and seafood and really don't like red wine).

I spent some glorious days in Rome and Naples, but most of the time was spent on a US military base located on the island of Sicily.

And at that base, they had a food court where I ate lunch most weekdays and some weekends, because it was easy and always open.

And what did they have there? Fast food, of course!

Now, if you've ever been to Sicily, you'll know that they still have a siesta during the afternoon.

It gets really hot there, so it makes sense.

And, if you're running around town on errands, like I did so often, and you don't have lunch by 12:30 or so, you're simply not going to have lunch.

Plain and simple.

That is, unless you go to McDonald's. And I did. A lot.

So, here I was in Italy, definitely not eating the Mediterranean diet, having just as much fast food as back in the USA.

And still... I would lose weight!

Now, why is that?

One final thought...

But I haven't always been so chubby.

I was as a child. And my parents, with the best intentions, tried to get me to lose weight, to eat better, and to exercise more.

And they thought the best way to do this was to use guilt, shame, and various types of cajoling.

None of those worked very well.

In fact, I lost weight twice before the age of 18. Once when I went on a well-known diet program. And it worked. Until people started telling me I was too skinny.

The other time was... surprise, surprise... the 6 months I spent in the country of Chile during high school as an exchange student...

It wasn't until a pivotal moment when I was almost 20, that I began to miraculously (and I mean that) lose weight.

One day I received a very disturbing call from one of my parents. It was a rant, really. All about how I wasn't doing things right and how I needed to shape up.

It made me so angry that I slammed the phone down and didn't speak to them for nearly 6 months.

And during that 6 months, I started losing weight.

In fact, I lost 100 pounds.

No dieting. No exercise. Nothing different.

It stayed off too. For nearly 5 years.

That is... until I took a job working for a couple who were almost replicas of my parents.

And then I started gaining weight slowly until 1997 when I threw down the towell!

Again, I ask, why is that?
